The 6th Annual Fred “Butch” Broesche Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament, with all proceeds going toward scholarships for students in the region, is scheduled for April 6th, 2019 at the Eagle Lake Golf Course with tee times at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The tournament format is a 4 person scramble with the cost being $200 per team, (deadline Apr. 5th). Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places. If you are not a golfer, there are still numerous sponsorships and ways to help available to benefit the Scholarship Fund. They include: Hole sponsorship ($100) ; donating to the raffle or silent auction; or just coming out to volunteer & enjoy the day.
The tournament was started in 2014 by the family and friends of Butch Broesche, after he lost his battle with cancer. Butch spent much of his life in Eagle Lake, but he had also lived in Flatonia and Crystal Beach. In his younger days, he played Community League baseball throughout the area. He loved to play golf whenever he had a chance. In life, he had a way of always reaching out to assist others in need. This tournament is a way to raise money to continue helping others.
The scholarship began in August of 2014. The proceeds from the tournaments, to date, have enabled the foundation to award scholarships totaling over $60,000 to upwards of 50 recipients. This year’s recipients were from Bexar, Brazos, Colorado, Fayette, Fort Bend, Harris, Lavaca, Leon, Washington, and Wharton counties.
Hopefully, with continued support, more scholarships can be awarded next year to help young men/women in the next stage of their lives. The scholarships are awarded to students who are continuing their education at a technical school, certification program, college, or university. These scholarships are not only for high school seniors who are just entering college, but also for those who are already continuing their education.
